 2023 Preview

Tuscaloosa Academy completed the 2022 season with a 10-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 2A region five, the Knights earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Tuscaloosa Academy lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Fyffe team by a score of 35-7.

The Knights won as many games as in any season since 2012.

Since 2010, Tuscaloosa Academy has gone a combined 92-52. Their 63.9% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Tuscaloosa Academy has managed to compile a record of 142-126. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 2A and 164th in the AHSAA.

The Knights are led by head coach Josh Wright who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 17-8 over the past two seasons at Tuscaloosa Academy. Under his direction the Knights have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won one region crown with Coach Wright. His 148 wins rank 33rd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Wright's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times and won nine region championships. Coach Wright won four state championships prior to arriving at Tuscaloosa Academy, the last coming in 2019 at Bessemer Academy.

Coach Wright needs two wins this season to reach the 150 win milestone.

The transition to the AHSAA could not have gone better for the Knights in 2022 as they posted ten victories and a couple of playoff wins in their initial season. With returning starters at key positions it should be another banner year in Tuscaloosa for the Knights.

The Knights enter the 2023 season riding a 7 game regular season winning streak. They have won 10 straight games on their home turf at Knights Stadium.

The Knights are considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Junior QB Preston Lancaster will be returning after completing 165 of 237 passes for 2,327 yards last season along with 24 touchdowns.

Receiver Mills Powell will return after catching 27 passes good for 523 yards and 7 TDs as a junior last season.

The defense will be led by Ford Beeker this season after collecting 102 total tackles last season.

The Knights open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Holy Spirit on Friday, August 25 at Arthur Howington Field. Last year the Holy Spirit Saints finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in eighth place in Class 1A region five. The Saints closed out the regular season with a loss to Fayetteville by a score of 41-14.

Tuscaloosa Academy and Holy Spirit have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Knights have a 2-0-0 record against the Saints. They last met in 2022 with Tuscaloosa Academy winning by a score of 45-12.

Tuscaloosa Academy lost 2A All-State  kicker Patton Turnipseed to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate defensive back Sherabiah Jones.

The Knights return 2A All-State Junior offensive lineman Jackson Cooper. He was named to the first team last season. The Knights also return Senior linebacker Cayden Richardson. He was named to the second team.
